AAPL (NASDAQ:AAPL) Down As Intel Bombs Stocks are off to start the week as Intel cut guidance for the fourth quarter by $1 billion. As such, shares of AAPL are off marginally, less than the rest of the NASDAQ. Catalysts include iPhone upgrade cycles and adoption; update to the iPad in early 2012; continued market share growth of the Mac business line; penetration in China and emerging markets; the evolution and potential re-conception of Apple TV; and platforms such as Siri, mobile advertising (iAd), books and publishing, gaming, mapping and social (Ping). Shares of Apple trade at 8.7x Enterprise Value / Trailing Twelve Months Free Cash Flow (including long-term marketable securities).
Apple Does Not Have Clearance For The iPhone 4S Launch In China (TNW)
Reports have been shot down that Chinese regulators have issued the final permit required for Apple to launch the iPhone 4S, with wireless operator China Unicom hoping to begin selling the device by the Christmas and New Year holidays. Apparently the certification was for the 8GB version of the iPhone 4. Boring. That said, should the iPhone 4S launch in the world’s most populated country, financial analysts have indicated that fourth calendar quarter estimates will see a strong upside.
The iPad 3 Is Coming In 3-4 Months According To Report (DigiTimes)
Apple will start scaling down production of the iPad 2 in the first quarter of 2012 to make room for the iPad 3. That means the iPad 3 will launch in about three or four months. Sources say the iPad 3 will go into production at the beginning of next year, with about 9.5 million units produced for the first wave.
The TV Industry Preparing For Voice Control Interface (BusinessWeek)
Many agree that an Apple TV set is likely to make use of voice control. Already, millions of Apple users are talking to their new iPhone 4S, thanks to Siri. Microsoft is already there, via Xbox 360 game, and Comcast, Samsung, LG, and Sharp are working on voice-enabled features for TV sets, set-top boxes, and related products. Nuance, the world’s largest supplier of voice recognition technology, says “a wave” of device makers will ship products that understand voice commands next year. Here is what the Apple TV might look like.
Apple hasn’t exactly been quiet in its patent wars, so the first isn’t likely and the idea that Apple didn’t have any options other than handing over valuable patents is ludicrous.
Retail Executive Search Continues As Oppenheimer Runs The Show (9To5Mac)
Since announcing Ron Johnson’s leave in June of this year, discussion has run rampant in regards to the successor of Apple’s vital retail division’s leader. At this point, it also appears that the three executives who sat under Johnson won’t be running Apple retail either. So, who is? CFO Peter Oppenheimer. He is obviously an interim leader with a lack of retail experience, but his executive leadership experience is enough to give orders to his new troops.
Shoppers Continue To Break Online Retail Records (TechCrunch)
comScore released its U.S. online holiday spending numbers for the season to-date and consumers continued to spend online in record amounts. For the first 39 days of the November to December 2011 holiday season, $24.6 billion has been spent online, up 15% from last year. Seven individual shopping days have surpassed $1 billion in spending, and the majority of these took place this year. Cyber Monday 2011 leads with $1.25 billion in sales, and Monday, December 5, 2011 now ranks as the second heaviest spending day in history at $1.18 billion.
