Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) latest software update, iOS 6.1, is here. This marks the first major update to iOS 6, which was first launched last September.
With the update, voice-activated personal assistant Siri can now purchase movie tickets through Fandango, and iTunes users can now download individual songs from iCloud. Perhaps more significant, though, is that additional 36 iPhone and 23 iPad carriers worldwide will gain LTE support for higher-speed wireless performance. The growing list includes major international carriers in Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa, as well as smaller U.S. carriers Alaska Communications (NASDAQ:ALSK), Bluegrass Cellular of Kentucky, and C Spire of Mississippi.
Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller says, “iOS 6 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, and with nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history.” The free software update is compatible with iPhone 5, 4S, 4, and 3GS as well as the third and fourth-generation iPad, iPad Mini, iPad 2, and the fourth and fifth-generation iPod Touch.
