Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has filed a patent application for an “intelligent automated assistant” that will put acquired technology Siri firmly in the company’s intellectual property suite. The 51-page application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office describes a program with which users can speak conversationally rather than just using select commands, according to AppleInsider.
The system “engages with the user in an integrated, conversational manner using natural dialog, and invokes external services when appropriate to obtain information or perform various actions,” the application describes.

Apple adds in the filing that the program is designed to do away with the complexity of a user dealing with separate user interfaces for different applications, which can prove to be “burdensome” to get used to. Among the data categories that can be integrated with Siri includes local services and nearby businesses, notes and calendar events, e-commerce services, and travel services.
“Many users may have difficulty even discovering what functionality and/or information is available on their electronic devices or on various websites,” the filing reads. “Thus, such users may become frustrated over overwhelmed, or may simply be unable to use the resources available to them in an effective manner.”
The filing includes screenshots of the original iPhone application that Apple acquired. One of the original inventors of the program, Dag Kittlaus, left Apple last year after the launch of the Siri-featuring iPhone 4S.
Shares of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) finished Thursday up 2.43% at $681.32.
