Apple: All Our Maps Need is Time

With Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) new Maps app being bombarded by criticism from users and technology reviewers all over the world, the company has reacted by announcing that the program is a work in progress and likely to get better with time.

Apple spokesperson Trudy Miller told AllThingsD on Thursday that they were taking in all the feedback and that the company was already working with external developers to add local transport options into the software. “We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it,” Miller said. “Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.”

The new app, built in-house by Apple with data from TomTom, replaced the standalone Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps app from iOS devices with the public release of iOS 6 and the launch of the iPhone 5. Customers used to the Google program, which had been preloaded into all Apple mobile devices from the time of the release of the first iPhone in 2007, were quick to point out the several obvious shortcomings of the new app.

The Apple app was censured for reporting inaccuracies such as misrepresented locations and incorrect labeling, for not being as functional as Google Maps, and for getting rid of public transit as a built-in option. The new program’s most-touted feature, Flyover, was also found wanting as it repeatedly encountered rendering bugs.

Users have taken to Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Twitter, Tumblr, and other social media networks to mock the apparent failings of the mapping application.
