Gone are the days when health food equated to tree-hugging hippies — well, mostly. Nowadays, some of the world’s healthiest foods are widely accessible and even inexpensive. Read on to learn more about some of the world’s healthiest foods, their benefits, and how to use them.

1. Swiss Chard

This leafy, green vegetable is often set apart by its varying stalk color: think orange, yellow, and red. High in magnesium, calcium and vitamin K (one boiled cup gets you six to eight times more than your suggested Daily Value), Swiss chard is proven to help strengthen bones and to help pancreatic cells regenerate.

Use: Though some write off the vegetable as “bitter,” try sauteing it in olive oil, garlic, red pepper, and lemon juice before dismissing it. Or, use chard in place of spinach when recipes call for it.
