Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN): Current price $272.34

Companies big and tiny are competing for control of a number of new Internet domain names, but the aspirations of Amazon are coming under a particular microscope. Objections are arising from two publishing industry groups, the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers, to the online retailer’s application for ownership of new top-level domain names which form part of a long-awaited expansion of the Web’s addressing scheme. The two argue that allowing Amazon control over such addresses as “.book,” “.author” and “.read”, could be a threat to competition and should be disallowed.
