All the top business stories of the day in the technology sector: 4 Tech Stock Stories Not to be Overlooked

Yahoo! (NASDAQ:YHOO): Closing price $20.95

Yahoo is unwrapping its much-anticipated remake of its iconic home page, while Chief Executive Marissa Mayer intends to reverse a long-term slide in the amount of time people spend on many of its sites. The new page features a stronger emphasis on scaling the news articles and other content to individual visitors’ personal interests, done in part based on their Facebook accounts. How this will work is that Yahoo will take information from a person’s Facebook account, like what their Facebook friends “liked” or “shared” on the social network, and use it to create a specialized array of constantly-updating news articles on its home page. This move develops from Yahoo’s previous endeavors at partnering with Facebook, which over time has taken a significant amount of Web traffic and online-ad-revenue share from Yahoo.

Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S): Closing price $5.79

On Wednesday, Sprint reported that it has joined with Telefónica in the creation one of the biggest mobile advertising alliances on Earth. Through the terms, between Telefónica Digital, which is the digital innovation unit of Telefónica, and Pinsight Media+, powered by Sprint, the two firms will work jointly on ways to empower global brands to potentially reach in excess of 370 million mobile customers across the United States, Europe and Latin America with targeted advertising. Working together, Sprint and Telefónica will try out efficient ways of supplying global advertisers and agencies with new and easier options through which to plan multicountry mobile campaigns. The idea is that the network will grow further in scale, especially to include Asia.

AOL (NYSE:AOL): Closing price $37.77

It may surprise some, but AOL still makes around $500 million per year on dial-up Internet, a sum which covers all of its corporate costs and then provides a neat profit on top. All of this is due to its trusted old-fashioned Internet connection that does not even permit users to talk on the phone when it’s in use.

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ): Current price $16.70

The European Commission Directorate General for Home Affairs has awarded a a contract to maintain the European Visa Information System to a consortium of Accenture, Morpho, and H-P. The contract lasts for three years with a possible one-year extension to a maximum value of about $93 million. The project will support the swapping of visa data across border management authorities by supporting the processing ability of the system and making high levels of search and matching capabilities required for visa applications available.
