On Tuesday, the FDA strengthened its prior warning in regards to the potential risks of azithromycin, manufactured in part by Pfizer which is a commonly used antibiotic that can lead to changes in the electrical activity of the heart that cause a fatal irregular heart rhythm in some patients. The dangers have been noted in the warning labels on the drug since March of 2012, and were quantified in greater detail in a study published in the spring of 2012 in the New England Journal of Medicine, that was led by a professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
