For all those who might wonder why they must pay for a TV cable that features 100 channels, many of which they surf right past every time, Cablevision has the answer — it’s Viacom’s fault. On Tuesday, the cable distributor sued Viacom, the owner of MTV and Nickelodeon, saying that it violated antitrust law by bundling those big channels with barely known ones such as Tr3s and Palladia, a move which forces cable companies and their customers to pay for channels that few people want. In its statement, Cablevision commented that, “Viacom effectively forces Cablevision’s customers to pay for and receive little-watched channels in order to get the channels they actually want.” A number of other distributors, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable and Charter, rallied in supprt of Cablevision after the suit was announced.
