Colts owner Jim Irsay, 54, was arrested on Sunday night and charged with four counts of felony possession, as well as one count of driving under the influence. Irsay, who has owned the Colts since 1997 after his father, who purchased the team (then located in Baltimore) in the ’70s, passed away. According to the police officer who pulled Irsay over, the NFL owner was unable to satisfactorily complete several roadside sobriety tests.
Irsay was arrested in Carmel, Indiana — 25 miles from the Lucas Oil Stadium where his team plays. According to the police report (and courtesy of Indy Star), multiple Schedule IV drugs were present in the vehicle and “were not associated with any prescription bottles found in the vehicle.”
A majority of drugs classified as Schedule IV by the US FDA are depressants, typically benzodiazepines or barbiturates. In order to be classified as a Schedule IV drug, a substance must have an accepted medical use in the United States. Irsay admitted to a dependence on painkillers in a 2002 statement, after he had sought treatment independently.
