After five and a half months, Molycorp’s (NYSE:MCP) shares are down 6.46 percent. On May 11th, the company reported its first quarter earnings.

Its net loss widened to $948,000 (7 cents per diluted share) from $909,000 (loss of 3 cents per share) in the same quarter a year earlier while its revenue increased more than threefold to $84.5 million from the year-earlier quarter. For the past five quarters, the company has seen double-digit year-over-year percentage revenue growth.

Mark Smith, Molycorp’s president and chief executive officer said of the quarter’s results, “The start of 2012 has been tremendously productive as we continue to hit each of our major milestones on the path to completion of Project Phoenix.”

Today, an official with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said its survey showed China’s rare earth reserves were actually lower than the expected world total. As with normal changes in supply and demand, investors bid up shares of Molycorp on the news.
