Diets are hard work. Calorie counting, dessert avoiding, food shaming — who needs it? Hungry does not equal happy, and that’s why people have trouble sticking to diets. They have the all or nothing mentality, and the nothing is not sustainable. But luckily, there are a few simple ways to cut calories and fat consumption, leading to weight loss, and they’re much are easier to swallow than swearing off carbs and only eating greens for weeks. As long as you’re conscious about a few food decisions, you can lose some pounds without losing your mind, and who knows, maybe those habits will even stick long after you’ve reached your goal weight.
So instead of jumping on the latest diet trend, or going Paleo, dairy-free, gluten-free, and happiness-free just to fit into your skinny jeans, read up on these six tips that help you cut calories without making you crazy. Of course these pieces of advice require some self control, and aren’t all fun and games; however, if you want to lose weight, you have to do some work, and luckily, this kind isn’t all bad.
1. Give up the sugary beverages
One easy way to cut a significant amount of calories out of your day is to stop drinking them. Yes, calories come in liquid form, too. One too many people make the mistake of failing to recognize that the sugary drinks they suck down every day at lunch and dinner come packed with calories, and many would argue that if you’re going to ingest upwards of 200 calories a pop, you might as well eat them. Not convinced? There are 182 calories in a single bottle of Coke. Nix your daily soda pop and you’ve already cut your weekly calorie consumption by 1,274. That makes a big difference.
And the same goes for specialty coffee drinks, too. Many consumers boast that they skip breakfast and only have a Starbucks drink for their morning meal; however, in reality, they’re only doing themselves a disservice. Starbucks speciality coffee drinks come loaded with sugar and calories, and though they coat your stomach for a few hours, that’s not lasting satiation. If you’re trying to lose a few pounds, help out your wallet and your waistline and give up your Starbucks addiction.
Lastly, watch the amount of cream and sugar you put in your regular coffee. A single serving of dairy cream and sugar will surely not devastate any diet, but if you’re having a cup of coffee an hour, those add-ins surely aren’t helping. If you are a big coffee drinker, wise up and try to take it black.
