In the future, we will look back at what will undoubtedly be one of the greatest bubbles in history: higher education. The field has preyed on the fears of well-intentioned parents coupled with student debt subsidies that allow schools to artificially inflate prices. As with all highly leveraged economic behavior, the end of days will be ugly.
This is a serious issue. If we don’t deal with it properly, the U.S. will continue to mint debt-shackled graduates who have less flexibility to put their skills to best use. Even worse, lenders and schools are skimming money from the economy that could be spent on trillions of more things to help small businesses and the economy grow.
It’s no secret I am obsessed with Peter Thiel’s new project The Thiel Fellowship. Although the ambitious project is not for everyone, it acknowledges human beings are not “one-sized-fits-all” and gives some of our society’s smartest and most creative thinkers an alternative path to the broken higher education system. The inforgraphic below continues to support why Thiel is merely a first-mover in what will become an incredible reform in the education system over the next 50-100 years:
