Lorde, Imagine Dragons Top Billboard Music Awards Nominees
The nominees for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards have been announced, with few surprises as many of the same contenders from the Grammys and other music awards re-appear as nominees for Billboard’s awards. Pop star Lorde and rock band Imagine Dragons are tied for 12 nominations each, followed by Justin Timberlake with 11 nominations, Katy Perry with 10, provocateur Miley Cyrus with nine, and Seattle-based rap duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with eight.
The 17-year-old New Zealand native Lorde has gained accolades for her caustic yet catchy single “Royals” from the album Pure Heroine. Lorde took home Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Royals.” That song is nominated for Top Hot 100 Song, Top Digital Song, Top Radio Song, Top Streaming Song (Audio), and Top Rock Song. Lorde herself is nominated for Top New Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, and Top Rock Artist. Part of Lorde’s success has been her ability to write catchy melodies that appeal to a younger, pop-oriented crowd, while her unique look and smart lyrics appeal to older alternative rock fans as well.
Lorde competes against Imagine Dragons in nine total categories, including Top Rock Artist and Top Rock Album. Imagine Dragons had a huge hit this year with the single “Radioactive” from the album Night Visions, and they played a well-received set at the Grammys with rapper Kendrick Lamar. “Radioactive” broke the record for the the most weeks ever on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
As for songs, Lorde’s “Royals” is competing against Robin Thicke’s controversial hit with Pharrell Williams and T.I. “Blurred Lines” in five categories each. Imagine Dragons received four nominations for “Radioactive” and Katy Perry got four nods for “Roar.” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were big winners at this year’s Grammy awards, and are nominated for Best Duo/Group, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Streaming Artist, and Top Rap Artist.
