‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Could Refresh Tired Marvel Formula

Marvel has released an extended trailer for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, which promises to be a more comedic take on the traditional Marvel comic-book movie formula than has been seen in the past.

Chris Pratt stars as the hero Star-Lord, who along with a motley crew of aliens is charged with saving the universe. Pratt is best known for his long-standing role on Parks and Recreation. Starring in the new Marvel franchise and leading the upcoming Jurassic Park reboot stand to turn Pratt from a loveable comedian into a movie star. Zoe Saldana co-stars as the green alien Gamora, and Star-Lord’s love interest. Saldana is an actress gorgeous enough to remain appealing while covered in green makeup. The film also features voice talent from Vin Diesel, who plays the tree-like alien Groot, and Bradley Cooper, who voices the character Rocket Raccoon.

The movie is considered to be a bit of a risk from Marvel, as the Guardians strip isn’t nearly as famous as Spider-Man or The Avengers characters. Using A-list actors that can potential for both comedy and action along with a sillier approach than is typical of Marvel seem to be good ways to set the film apart from other Marvel offerings and encourage people to go see it even though they’re not familiar with the story going in.

“I look around, and you know what I see? Losers,” Star-Lord says in the new trailer, which features the music of Joan Jett’s first band the Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb.” The trailer teases lots of fun visuals of the story’s interstellar world.
