Emma Stone Joins Joaquin Phoenix in Woody Allen’s Upcoming Film

Spiderman, Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield

Woody Allen may be one of the most controversial filmmakers in the world, but his casting choices are irrefutably wise. The versatile Emma Stone is the latest star to join Allen’s next film, according to Variety. Stone, who’s chemistry with Andrew Garfield is the only saving grace of the bloated Amazing Spider-Man reboot series, has proven her comedic chops in SuperbadEasy A, and Zombieland. She also got the best line while gazing at a shirtless Ryan Gosling in Crazy, Stupid Love.

Working with Allen is usually a wise career move for actresses (Cate Blanchett can attest to that), though working with Allen in 2014 is certainly different than working with him ten or twenty years ago. Stone is immensely likable, though actresses who become popular also spur great torrents of backlash (Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johansson are two recent examples), and Allen isn’t exactly the most popular guy in the world right now. So, it remains to be seen how people will respond. One wishes the best for Stone, but one doesn’t always get what one wants.

Stone joins Joaquin Phoenix, one of the best actors of his generation. Phoenix and the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman put on an acting masterclass in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, and he’s returning for Anderson’s adaptation of Pynchon’s postmodern, hard-boiled stoner novel Inherent Vice. It’ll be interesting seeing how a dedicated, and by all accounts idiosyncratic method actor like Phoenix pairs with Allen, who, according to Blanchett, offers little guidance and fires actors with regularity.
