It’s shaping up to be an incredible year in 2014 for young adult debut authors. From island adventures, to fighting for your life, to young love, this year is hands down the time to pick up a book. So if you’re looking to add some new selections to your reading list, here are five debut young adult novels to check out this year.

1. Something Real by Heather Demetrios (February 4, 2014)

The book Something Real is definitely something special. If you’re a fan of reality TV, you don’t want to miss this debut novel by Heather Demetrios. The book follows a girl named Bonnie Baker who grew up on television and wants nothing more than to have a normal life. The novel is fun, thought-provoking, and may just make you think differently when enjoying a reality TV show.

2. NIL by Lynne Matson (March 4, 2014)

If you’re a fan of Survivor and the cult-classic Lost, try Nil by Lynne Matson. This adventurous book follows a seventeen-year-old girl named Charley on the mysterious island Nil where you have exactly 365 days to escape or you die. Nil is full of nonstop action from beginning to end, so make sure to have some coffee ready, because once you start this, you won’t want to stop.
