Family Guy

It’s the never-ending cycle of TV shows. You find one (or more) shows that you like, you follow those shows religiously, and then cross your fingers each year, hoping it’ll live to see another season. But all TV shows eventually must come to an end. What’s unusual about the shows in this list is that they were canceled, but still managed to find their way back to TV. Fan campaigns, strong rerun ratings, and great DVD sales helped breathe new life into these canceled shows.

1. Family Guy

It’s hard to believe that this long-standing animated sitcom on Fox, which is about Peter Griffin and his odd family of middle-class New Englanders living in Quahog, was ever canceled. In the beginning (the show first came on the air in 1999), the show did gain some popularity due to its humor and “frequent pop culture parodies,” per IGN. But it was up against some pretty tough competition. Other Sunday night shows at the time included hits such as Frasier and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, which ultimately led to Family Guy’s cancellation after three seasons.

After the show was canceled, Family Guy’s loyal fans continued to boost the show’s rerun ratings on Adult Swim, and it continued to have great DVD sales. Fox decided to bring it back, and in 2005 Family Guy reappeared for its fourth season, according to IGN. Family Guy is now in Fox’s main Sunday night lineup, proving that this resurrection was a success.
