All the top business stories of the day in the technology sector: 3 Tech Stock Stories For a Monday Investment Scan

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL): Closing price $442.93

The analyst Brian White at Topeka Capital Markets believes that China’s rapid growth in fast-mobile subscriptions, along with the growing mobile rivalry among the huge Chinese mobile carriers, will be crucial factors in propelling Apple’s stalled-out stock price to unknown levels at more than $800. With more than three quarters of net new mobile growth in the emerging markets, Apple needs a cheaper and more carrier-inviting product suite, which White says should arrive this summer. On Monday, the three top Chinese carriers posted subscriber growth for April, and wireless subscribers gained 13 percent year-over-year to 1.16 billion.

UniPixel (NASDAQ:UNXL): Closing price $25.95

The provider of Performance Engineered Films to the touchscreen, electronics, and lighting and display markets, has received a $5-million payment pursuant to its recently- announced second preferred price and capacity license with a significant touch-screen ecosystem partner. UniPixel recruited the licensee to make easier the development, debut and output of products that sport next-generation touch screens based on UniPixel’s UniBoss” pro-cap, multi-touch sensor film. UniPixel will recognize the payment as deferred revenue in the second quarter, and apply the funds towards building out an additional 1 million square feet per month of UniBoss production capacity.

Priceline.com (NASDAQ:PCLN): Closing price $842.50

Shares have been upgraded at Deutsche Bank from Hold to Buy, alongside a price target of $900, up from $715.00. Analyst Ross Sandler said that margins should stabilize and the multiple could rise back to 20x. Sandler commented in part that ”PCLN is the clear global secular winner in the OTA space, owing to its unique supply footprint, industry-high growth rates and margins, and overexposure to our preferred international hotel bookings. We believe it should start to see margins stabilize in the second half as it comps the negative ROI period that began in mid-2012.”

Cisco keeps reinvesting through dividends and stock buybacks but how high can the dividend go as the company's network switching business matures?

Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) has been generating cash and analysts are expecting the company to increase its dividend. This past quarter, the Cisco paid out a dividend of 17 cents per share — $905 million in total. Currently, the company’s dividend yield is 3.2 percent. For comparison, Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) dividend is 2.8 percent, Qualcomm’s (NASDAQ:QCOM) dividend is 2.1 percent and Intel’s (NASDAQ:INTC) dividend is 3.7 percent.

“Dividend has increasingly become larger, and we expect Cisco to be a dividend grower over time,” said Mark Sue, a RBC Capital Markets analyst, according to iStock Analyst. “With maturation of its top line, we expect earnings to outpace revenues with consistent cash flow returned to shareholders.” Cisco has committed to using at least 50 percent of its free cash flow to boost returns for shareholders in the form of stock buybacks and dividends.

NEW! Discover a new stock idea each week for less than the cost of 1 trade. CLICK HERE for your Weekly Stock Cheat Sheets NOW!

The company’s network switch and router business is serving a now mature market and revenue growth is expected to be in the 5-6 percent range this year and next. Dividend Channel has recently named Cisco the top dividend stock of the NASDAQ 100, Forbes reported. Keeping investors happy while it looks to shift its product offerings to better fit into the “cloud” is key for Cisco’s future. Both Intel and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) have recently announced projects that will ultimately exert great pressure on the company’s core business of high-end network equipment.

Keeping its yield high is important for Cisco but it brings into question when the company is going to make a big move to establish itself as a key player in the software side of networking — the future of the networking industry. Top-end network switching hardware is moving towards open, non-proprietary standards and Cisco will have to stay on top of its game to brave the transition. What happens to Cisco once Intel and Facebook’s initiatives render top-of-the-rack network routing equipment something that Intel processors already inside servers can handle themselves?

NEW! Discover a new stock idea each week for less than the cost of 1 trade. CLICK HERE for your Weekly Stock Cheat Sheets NOW!

The network equipment market is still huge and growing but becoming less profitable as it matures. Investors have to wonder when Cisco will finally make good on its plans to shift its focus elsewhere. The future is still bright for Cisco as long as it anticipates changes in its core markets.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT): Closing price $34.08

Industry sources report that Microsoft will release a 7.9-inch Surface tablet at the end of next month, featuring displays from Samsung Display, but LG Display and Taiwan-based firms have not thus far been included in the panel supplier list for the new product. However, the sources also said that panel suppliers hold ‘conservative views’ for the upcoming 7.9-inch unit in 2013, even in the face of rising popularity for similar sized tablets. Samsung and LGD have each been panel providers for Microsoft’s 10.6-inch Surface, but IDC says that Microsoft sold a mere 900,000 Surface tablets in the first quarter, comprising 1.8 percent of the tablet market. Due to the results, tablets of around 8 inches are forecast to hold a 12 percent market share this year, largely because of expected sales for Apple’s 7.85-inch iPad mini, according to the sources.

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG): Closing price $903.87

Thursday was a big day for YouTube’s live offering, with the announcement that access to it will be available soon to several of its partners. YouTube Live was prior to now only available to a few hand-picked channels and partners, the feature will be introduced to any YouTube channel in good standing with over 1,000 subscribers. The availability of YouTube Live to more creators comes two years after it first reported the feature, but it also is being launched after YouTube ran serious stress testing on the product, including live streaming of the 2012 London Olympics.

SAP on Thursday unveiled new breakthroughs in the in-memory SAP HANA platform, among which were the most recent innovations in Service Pack 6. SAP HANA is a completely re-imagined platform that transforms analytics, transactions, predictive and text sentiment processing in order for businesses to operate in real time.

Nokia Corporation (NYSE: NOK) Current price $3.84

Shares were set for a higher open on Monday, reacting to positive comments from Danske Bank that were issued earlier. At the same time, Danske upgraded shares by two gradations from Sell to Buy, and raised its price target by 80 percent to 3.60 euros. The firm’s analysts commented that “investors are becoming more positive on Nokia’s ability to raise debt as well as solve its problems. In addition, performance from its Nokia Siemens Networks joint venture is improving ahead of a potential deal, meaning a dramatic re-rating on Nokia’s share price is likely.”

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG): Current price $880.23

Chief Executive Elon Musk who leads Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA), says that his company is looking at adding driverless tech to its vehicles, and is discussing the possibilities for such systems with Google. Musk commented that technologies that can take over for drivers constitute a logical phase in the evolution of automobiles. He has talked with Google about the self-driving technology it’s been developing, although he would rather think of applications that are closer to an airplane’s autopilot system. In an interview, Musk remarked, “I like the word autopilot more than I like the word self- driving. Self-driving sounds like it’s going to do something you don’t want it to do. Autopilot is a good thing to have in planes, and we should have it in cars.”

Additionally, Einhorn expects more innovations from the technology firm, according to a conference call Tuesday held by his Greenlight Capital reinsurer.

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG): Current price $873.84

Google is poised to debut a new interface for Google Maps. This update will eliminate the sidebar and will display everything atop the full-screen map. One of the new features allows the restricting of local search results to places recommended by top reviews or Google+ circles. The update is a more immersive interface that will likely work well on mobile devices. Rather than concentrating upon navigational elements, buttons and sidebars, the new Google Maps centers on the map.
